Embedded in the Perlacher Forst and the Isarauen
Today I would like to introduce you to Harlaching, one of the most beautiful districts of Munich. This south-eastern part of Munich is situated between the Isar and the Perlacher Forst. Harlaching belongs to the 18th Munich district Untergiesing-Harlaching, which has a population of around 53,000 people. Approximately a quarter of the 806 hectares of the total area consists of green spaces as well as sports facilities.
The unique flair of life in Harlaching may be characterised as ‘enjoying nature and Munich city life simultaneously’. This statement is a result of the fact that Harlaching has two of the most attractive local recreation areas in Munich, the Perlacher Forst and the Isarauen. At the same time, the city centre with all its benefits can be reached in around ten minutes using the underground to travel to the central station.
I was born, and I am living in Harlaching. I truly love this part of Munich. In my perception, the distinctive attributes of Harlaching are the fresh air, the stillness and the remarkable friendliness of its residents.
Living near the Perlacher Forst
It is terrific to roam around the many tiny forest paths of the Perlacher Forst and to go jogging on its fitness trail. With beautiful weather, hiking to the Perlacher Mugl and enjoying the fantastic view of the mountains can make your day. The Perlacher Forst with its area of 13.36 square kilometres, is correctly described as being the lungs of Munich. The Vollmarpark, the spacious green spaces of the Athener Platz and the Griechenplatz invite you to stay and hang around. Tennis Kail, which feels to exist since eternity, offers tennis enthusiasts well-maintained clay courts from the end of March till October. You can rent the courts on an hourly base, without prior membership fees. The tennis courts are located directly at the main entrance to the Perlacher Forst, at Säbener Platz.
Quality of life around the Perlacher Forst
The residential area around the Perlacher Forst stretches from Mangfallplatz to the Harlachinger Krankenhaus, which is the hospital of Harlaching. This location is a colourful mixture of detached single-family houses, semi-detached and terraced houses as well as apartment buildings. The most significant part of this residential area is classified as ‘excellent residential area’ by the official Munich rent index. The charm of this residential area lies in the immediate vicinity to the Perlacher Forst, the proximity to various schools, kindergartens and the ideal public transport connection by underground at the Mangfallplatz station.
Living in Alt-Harlaching
The area around the ‘Alt-Harlachinger Isarhochufer’ is one of the most exclusive and expensive residential areas of Munich. Alt-Harlaching has an enormously high recreational value: whether you are cycling, walking or jogging, it will be a real pleasure at the upper river banks of the Isar. The beautiful beer garden Menterschwaige is located directly on the banks of the Isar. It invites you to stay and enjoy a cheerful get-together. The Bavarian King Ludwig I. is said to have especially appreciated this location and to have had a love nest with Lola Montez in the adjacent house, which is nowadays known as ‘Lola Montez House’. The Italian restaurant Trattoria Antica Nuova has a lovely garden, which is also situated directly on the upper banks of the Isar. You can get down to the Isar easily and quickly from there. The Isar inspires to go for a swim or to picnic. You can also start for a day trip walking along the Isar. The zoo Hellabrunn is another nearby attraction for families.
Quality of life in Alt-Harlaching
The ‘Gartenstadt Harlaching’ and the ‘Villenkolonie Menterschwaige’ were the first large building projects in Alt-Harlaching. Here you will still find beautiful spacious villas from the early 20th century, surrounded by old trees. In case you appreciate the unique charm of traditional high-standard villas, you will feel excited in this part of Harlaching. In the course of the last years, many more luxury apartment buildings were built. It is not surprising that Alt-Harlaching is one of Munich’s top residential areas. It has very high price levels for buying and renting a property.
